Mayra Suero-Suero-Wade, DDS, MPH

Mayra Suero-Wade is a licensed, board-certified dentist practicing in New York City and  New Jersey.  She is pat/time Associate Professor of Dentistry at Columbia University School of Dental Medicine (CUSDM) and provides care to underserved children via her dental care practice; Dentistry In Motion, Inc.  She is a graduate of Columbia University School of Dental & Oral Surgery with a combined degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery and Master in Public Health.  Her area of interest is providing dental care to the underserved population and had the opportunity to publish a chapter entitled “Meeting the Needs of the Elderly” Dr. Lynn Tepper’s book titled Respite Care. Dr. Suero-Wade completed her undergraduate degree at New York University where she was a language major.

Her post-dental school training includes: general practice residency training at Newark Beth Israel Hospital; periodontal training program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine; and countless continuing education courses.  Dr. Suero-Wade held several employment positions that included management, administration and dental treatment of patients.  In 1991 she purchased a four chair dental practice in New York City that needed revitalization.  She turned that practice around and had a very successful practice for over 10 years.  In 2004 she sold the practice to a small group of dentist for a very large profit.  Dr. Suero-Wade is knowledgeable about the Policies & Procedures of a dental practice, Infection Control regulations, employment/HR issues, and HIPPA laws.  She presently devotes part of her time consulting young health professionals on practice start-up and exit strategies (www.dentistryinmotiongroup.com).

Dr. Suero-Wade also uses her professional knowledge in an innovative way to serve and help children.  Over 20 years ago Dr. Suero-Wade made dental care available to agencies that provide health services to foster care children.  She started her services when she realized that children in foster care where going without dental services because of the cost and the complexity of finding dental care providers to follow-up with the care of the children.  Agencies were also being threatened with losing their accreditation if their dental compliance rates fell below acceptable levels.  In 1990 she accepted the challenge of helping the New York Foundling with the dental care of 500 children under their protection.  At the time their dental compliance rate was only17% (17% of the children were under the care of a dentist).  Dr. Suero-Wade purchased portable dental equipment and used her masters in public health experience to develop an in-house dental care program to serve all of the children at New York Foundling.  As a result, the dental compliance rate soared above 80% in six months.  An added benefit was that the dental program was a tremendous saving to the agency.  Dr. Suero-Wade has also cared for the teens incarcerated in New York City, treated teen mothers in a Mother/Child program, and provides free dental care to the poor world wide through a foundation she founded with her husband Dr. Mark Wade (www.awmfoundation.org).  To Dr. Suero-Wade it has been a blessing to be able to help those that can’t help themselves, in particular the children.

Winner of numerous awards and citations from New York City, New York State, New Jersey and other jurisdictions, including an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters from Felician College, Dr. Suero-Suero-Wade has given selflessly of herself to others.
